Right now, there are two pilot programs available for caregivers who want to become permanent residents:
- the Home Child Care Provider Pilot, and
- the Home Support Worker Pilot
Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot are new government programs for caregivers who want to work in Canada and become permanent residents.
To qualify for either of these programs, you must meet eligibility requirements set by the government. You must:
- meet English or French language requirements,
- have at least 24 months of qualifying work experience,
- have foreign educational credentials and an Educational Credential Assessment, or a credential from a post-secondary Canadian institution that took 1 year or longer,
- have a job offer to be a child care provider or a home support worker.
These programs are designed to give you the work experience you need to become a permanent resident of Canada.
Caregiver programs that are now closed
In the past, there were more options available to caregivers wanting to become permanent residents. The most popular was the Live-in Caregiver Program, which was closed in 2014.
The Caring for Children Program, the Caring for People with High Medical Needs Program, and the Interim Pathways for Caregivers program all closed in 2019. If you applied to these programs before they were closed, your applications are still being processed.
If you are currently working in Canada under any of these programs, you may need to apply to extend your work permit. Your employer may also need to apply for a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
You may be eligible to apply for a temporary work permit from outside of Canada if your employer received a positive LMIA that they applied for before June 18, 2019. You may also be eligible for a temporary work permit if you want to work in Quebec.
You can apply for permanent residency through the Live-in Caregiver Program if you have at least 2 years of experience with the program, have a Live-in Caregiver Permit, and meet other criteria.
