If you used to be a Canadian citizen and want to be a citizen again, you may be eligible for citizenship resumption.

You can only follow the process to resume Canadian citizenship if you voluntarily gave up your citizenship in the past or lost your citizenship for a reason other than revocation. If you had your citizenship revoked, you must begin a completely new citizenship application.

To qualify for citizenship resumption, you must:

  • have been a Canadian citizen in the past,
  • have become a permanent resident after you lost your citizenship,
  • have been in Canada for at least 365 days over the past 2 years, and
  • have filed your taxes the year before applying (if applicable).

If you are under a removal order or fall into any of the prohibitions contained in the Citizenship Act, you cannot resume Canadian citizenship.

To apply for citizenship resumption, you must send the government:

  • proof that you used to be a Canadian citizen,
  • proof that you have lost your citizenship,
  • your Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence, plus your Permanent Resident Card if applicable,
  • two pieces of personal identification, and
  • any other legal documents relevant to citizenship (ex. marriage certificates).
