If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, you can sponsor your family members to immigrate to Canada and become permanent residents. Sponsored family members are allowed to live, work, and study in Canada.

Family members you are allowed to sponsor are:

  • your spouse or common-law partner,
  • your dependent children, including adopted children, and
  • your parents and grandparents.

There are several steps involved in sponsoring a family member. The process is different depending on your relationship to the family member.

In very specific cases, you are allowed to sponsor other relatives, including brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. You are only allowed to sponsor one relative who falls into these categories. You are can sponsor one of these relatives if:

  • you do not have a spouse, partner, parent, grandparent, or child who you can sponsor,
  • you do not have any relative who is a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.

Eligibility requirements to sponsor family members

To sponsor your family members to become permanent residents of Canada, you must meet these criteria:

  • you must be at least 18 years old,
  • you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident,
  • you must not be receiving any social assistance from the government (unless it is for a disability), and
  • you must be able to provide for the basic needs of the person you sponsor.

You may not be allowed to sponsor family members if you are in jail, if you have declared bankruptcy and have not been discharged, or if you have committed a violent criminal offence.

Note that the province of Quebec has additional requirements for sponsoring family members.
