Medical inadmissibility can apply to anyone who wants to live in Canada for an extended period of time. This includes people who come to Canada to work, live, or study.

If you come to Canada, you may be asked to do a medical exam with an approved medical professional. Your medical admissibility is based on the results of this exam.

There are three reasons why someone would be declared inadmissible for health-related reasons:

  • the results of your medical exam show that your presence in Canada is a threat to Canadians (ex. if you have an infectious disease)
  • the results of your medical exam show that you have a condition that makes you a security threat to Canadians (ex. if you have a condition that results in violent or unpredictable behaviour)
  • the results of your medical exam show that you may create an excessive demand on Canada’s public healthcare system or other social services.

According to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, medical inadmissibility does not apply to Protected Persons or refugees who have applied for permanent residency status.
