If you are a foreign national who wants to study at a Canadian post-secondary school or learning institution, you need to have a study permit. A study permit lets you live and study in Canada as a temporary resident.
Note that a study permit is different than a visa. Citizens of some countries also require a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA) to study in Canada.
To apply for a study permit, you must:
- already be enrolled at a designated learning institution and have an acceptance letter,
- have enough money to pay your tuition and support yourself and your dependents (if applicable),
- have a valid passport or travel document,
- be in good health, and
- not have a criminal record.
In most cases, you must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada.
A study permit lets you stay in Canada for the duration of your educational program, plus an extra 90 days. During the 90-day window, you can either prepare to leave Canada or apply for another temporary residence permit.
