If you need to come to Canada but are considered inadmissible, you may still be able to visit using a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP).

A TRP lets you enter Canada as long as the border officer determines that your visit to Canada is beneficial to the country and does not threaten the health and security of Canadians.

For example, a TRP Permit may still allow you to enter Canada if:

  • you have received a criminal conviction and completed your sentence within the past 5 years, or
  • you are a citizen of a country that requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTa), but your eTa has been refused.

Reasons why you might apply for a TRP include:

  • to travel to Canada for work-related reasons,
  • to attend a family member’s wedding or funeral, or
  • to visit a sick relative.

Applying for Temporary Residence Permit

You can apply for a TRP at:

  • a Canadian consulate or visa application centre in your home country, or
  • at a port-of-entry when you arrive in Canada.

You can renew or extend your TRP from inside Canada.

In certain situations, you may also be able to apply for TRP from inside Canada.
