A visitor visa, also called a temporary resident visa, allows foreign nationals to stay in Canada for a limited period of time. A visitor visa allows you to travel in Canada, visit friends or relatives, attend weddings or funerals, and more. A visitor visa does not allow you to work or study.
Most people are allowed to stay in Canada for up to 6 months with a visitor visa.
To be eligible for a visitor visa, you must:
- have a passport or travel document
- be in good health
- have enough money to last the duration of your visit
The process for getting a visitor visa varies depending on your nationality, personal history, and reasons for visiting Canada. Citizens of some countries require an electronic travel authorization (eTa) instead of a visitor visa.
You can also apply to extend your visitor visa.
